Man Carrying Woman on Back

The decision to get labiaplasty is a very personal one. Typically, women opt for this procedure if they either experience pain or discomfort with enlarged or damaged labia, or if the appearance of their labia makes them self-conscious. This is especially if a woman’s feelings of self-consciousness are so strong they cause her to avoid sexual intimacy.

Labiaplasty not only helps women feel more comfortable and alleviate pain in the most sensitive area of their body, the aesthetic changes the surgery provides often results in a boost in self-confidence that makes women more comfortable in intimate situations. In fact, many Houston women confide in Dr. Yarish that their main reason for desiring the surgery is so they can feel more confident during sexual intercourse.

Considering that the act of making love is so closely tied to a woman’s confidence in her body, it’s no wonder that many of the Houston women Dr. Yarish consults with about labiaplasty wonder how long they must abstain from sexual intercourse after undergoing this plastic surgery procedure. After living years, or perhaps even a lifetime, with labia (vaginal “lips”) they find unattractive, these women are ready to finally feel confident in bed.

The good news for Houston women is that labiaplasty has a relatively quick recovery time period, and abstinence is typically only required for a short period of time.

Most Labiaplasty Patients Need to Refrain from Sexual Intercourse for 1 Month

Typically speaking, Houston women who undergo labiaplasty surgery need to abstain from sexual intercourse for the first month following their procedure. Remember though, that there are multiple techniques at performing this surgery. Some women have labiaplasty performed on both their labia minora and labia majora and thus require longer periods of recuperation, and everyone heals differently. Therefore, you shouldn’t restart sexual intercourse after a labiaplasty procedure until Dr. Yarish clears you for sexual activity during one of your post-op appointments.

Tips for Healing Faster

Dr. Yarish understands that it is hard to abstain from intimacy with that special loved one in your life. While not a guarantee, certain aftercare habits and routines might be able to speed up the recovery process, or at least ensure you are ready for sex 1 month post-op instead of needing additional recovery time.* These habits include:

  • Taking any prescription painkillers or anti-inflammatory drugs exactly as prescribed
  • Taking antibiotics exactly as prescribed, which are often given to labiaplasty patients during their recovery period out of an abundance of caution to prevent an infection at the surgical site
  • Getting plenty of rest (meaning you’re off your feet) in the initial days following your surgery
  • Refraining from strenuous exercise the first month after your procedure
