About “Mommy Makeover?”

If you’re like most women, you have paid for the blessing of children with varying degrees of breast, tummy, and other issues. Typically, much of this will resolve with time and through diet and exercise. However, excess skin on the breasts and abdomen leave most Houston and Lake Jackson women with a body they don’t recognize and don’t want.

That’s where a mommy makeover comes in. This combination surgery is designed to contour a woman’s body and get rid of those physical changes she’s still dealing with after she’s done having children.

There are three basic procedures that are performed at the same surgical setting. They are:

  • Breast augmentation, breast reduction, and/or breast lift
  • Tummy tuck that removes excess and/or stretch-marked skin of the abdomen
  • Liposuction of areas that are resistant to fat burning no matter what you do to reduce

Procedures Included in A Mommy Makeover

Dr. Yarish and Dr. Bartlett use a mommy makeover to address these different areas of the body using any combination of them. The details of each are mentioned below.

Breast Augmentation

breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure used to increase the size of a woman’s breasts to a more flattering size. For most women in Houston and Lake Jackson, the effects of aging, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and weight fluctuations often leave the breasts not quite as full as they once were. Our doctors use breast implants to restore the patient’s silhouette to a more youthful one.

Breast Lift

Many times, our doctors also perform a breast lift, medically known as mastopexy, to remove the excess skin on the breasts. This procedure is often done in combination with a breast augmentation if desired due to the loss of fullness that most postpartum women develop, particularly in the upper portion of the breast. Besides lifting and tightening the breast, mastopexy also raises the nipples to a more youthful level and reduces the size of the areola (the darker skin around the nipple) if desired.

Tummy Tuck

For women who have excess skin and stretch marks left over after having children or having experienced extreme weight loss, our doctors can perform a tummy tuck, which is medically known as abdominoplasty, as part of your mommy makeover. This procedure not only removes excess skin, but it also eliminates most or all stretch marks. Moreover, since much of the postpartum “bulge” is due to stretching or separating of the abdominal muscles, those weakened muscles are repaired during a tummy tuck as well. Often after babies, the navel ALSO suffers irreparable distortion. So of course, in the interest of leaving no stone unturned, our doctor will also recreate the original navel to the greatest extent possible.

And to top it all off, many women usually choose to include liposuction as part of their mommy makeover. Liposuction is used to recontour the entire chest and abdominal area, and frequently the legs and arms. Of course, the amount and location of liposuction vary according to the particular issues and interests of the patient at the time. It is rare for our doctors to perform a tummy tuck without at least some liposuction to get the most pleasing, naturally sculptured results. Patients should remember that liposuction is not a weight loss surgery and only removes up to 4 pounds of fat per session. While it is best to be at or near your ideal goal weight prior to having a mommy makeover, it is not always possible with diet and exercise alone. Our doctors work with each individual to give them the results they desire.

Breast Reduction

While most women suffer from breasts that are deflated, sagging, and smaller than they were before pregnancy, for women who find themselves with breasts that are too large, our doctors will perform a breast reduction. Houston and Lake Jackson women who suffer from daily pain in their backs and necks, frequent headaches, and never pain associated with the excess weight of their breasts, incorporating a breast reduction in their mommy makeover can get them back to a life free from that pain and discomfort.

Candidates for A Mommy Makeover

As long as Houston women are healthy and done having children, you are most likely to be a great candidate for a Mommy Makeover. Just keep in mind that if you plan on having more children, your results might not be permanent, as the body will again stretch during pregnancy.

To be considered for the mommy makeover procedure, our doctors require patients to be in good general health and to pass a pre-operative well-check with their general practitioner prior to surgery, to be in good psychological health, to have realistic expectations for their results. The overall health and wellbeing of each of his patients is his top priority, so he wants to ensure you are healthy and can safely have elective surgery.

What to Expect The Day of The Surgery?

As you read this, you may be thinking that this is a lot for one surgery for one setting. However, a mommy makeover is nearly always an outpatient procedure, with Houston and Lake Jackson patients going home with their caretaker the same day, just like other surgeries performed in our facility under general anesthesia.

The time required for a mommy makeover is generally less than 4 hours, depending upon the specific needs of the patient and the amount of liposuction performed.

Recovering from Mommy Makeover

Interestingly enough, the recovery from the complete “mommy makeover” is essentially the same as it would be for the tummy tuck procedure itself. Most patients seen at Yarish Plastic Surgery are able to drive within 7-14 days, return to “sit down” jobs in 14 days or less, and full activity (including returning to your regular exercise routine) within a month. Again, recovery varies from patient to patient. Some recovery periods are less, and some may be slightly more; however, there are things you can do to make your recovery process more comfortable, and go by more quickly.

When our doctors release you to a friend or family member after your mommy makeover, they will provide you with details on what to do and what not to do during your recovery. Generally, these post-op instructions will include recommendations such as:

  • Stand up flexed at the hip and sleep with legs elevated
  • Avoid lifting anything weighing more than 10 pounds
  • Do not lift your arms over your head for the first few days
  • Take your pain medication as prescribed and on the recommended schedule
  • Do not submerge your incisions in water until we clear you to do so
  • Maintain a healthy diet and drink plenty of water

Because every woman is different, and every mommy makeover is tailored to the specific needs of each woman, your recovery will also be different. There is also a chance our doctors will make changes to your post-op instructions based on your specific needs.

Our State-of-The-Art Facility

At Yarish Plastic Surgery, we also offer a full service overnight stay facility with continuous care for Houston and Lake Jackson patients who want that level of care and attention. This may simply be a matter of personal comfort or maybe chosen our doctors due to previously existing medical issues, the length of surgery, medications, or lack of personal caretakers. Whether the overnight stay option is chosen or not, our nursing staff will assist you with a shower and dressing change the morning after surgery. This may be the single, most amazing feel-good part of the entire process, next to the results themselves.

The Follow Up

Postoperative care at Yarish Plastic Surgery begins immediately. The assisted shower and dressing change we mentioned above is just the beginning. All of our surgery patients head to our ReNew You MD Medical Spa where they are treated to adjunctive sessions of lymphatic drainage massage of all surgical areas. Additionally, all incisions are treated with a combination of our proprietary scar cream, silicone taping, and/or laser therapy in order to give the best overall appearance.

The Results

Visit our photo gallery to find the results you are looking for. As you can tell from our photos, results vary with the size, shape, and amount of physical change that has been caused by childbearing or weight fluctuations throughout the years. It’s often hard to believe so much can be done within one surgical setting!

Frequently Asked Questions About the Mommy Makeover

  • Can I Get A Mommy Makeover If I've Had A C-Section?

Of course, you can get a Mommy Makeover if you’ve had a C-section! In fact, the sagging skin that hangs over the C-section scar is one of the main reasons Houston women come to us for help. The tummy part of the procedure removes the entire C-section scar if there is one, removes the stretch marks in the lower tummy, and tightens the abdominal muscles that have been stretched or separated.

  • What About My Breasts? How Is That Procedure Done?

Although your breasts enlarge during pregnancy, most women end up losing a significant amount of volume, which at the same time creates sagging. If you are happy with the size of your breasts after childbearing, then no increase or decrease in size is required. Sagging and laxity nearly always occurs however, and lifting and tightening your breasts are integral parts of the mommy makeover whether you reduce or increase the size.

  • Is Liposuction Necessary?

Most often during pregnancy, areas of fat grow where you’ve never had them before.  These areas are resistant to weight loss and exercise so at least some suction is usually necessary to recontour those unwanted/unsightly areas.

  • Are There Any Risks for Houston Women When Having A Mommy Makeover?

All surgeries, including Mommy Makeovers, come with risks. Luckily, these complications are rare due to our doctors’ expertise, skill, and experience (many hundreds performed).

  • Will I Need Help Taking Care Of My Family After The Procedure?

We get it — you’re a mommy first and foremost, so taking yourself out of action for a bit can sound daunting. Everyone’s recovery period is a little different, but like most surgeries, you’ll be limited in what you can do for period of time. So depending upon the ages of your children, you will need some extra help around the house. You should be able to drive within 7-14 days and most women return to work in two weeks, depending upon the physical demands of their occupation.

  • Will A Mommy Makeover Give Me Scars?

Scarring from any type of surgery is inevitable. That being said, we can help you minimize scars as much as possible using topical creams, laser lightening, and other measures we’ve developed to limit scarring. These treatments are included in your surgical package in order to promote rapid healing with minimally visible incision sites.

  • What Can I Expect In my Consultation?

To begin, our doctors will take a look at your medical history to see if you’re a good candidate for a Mommy Makeover. They will then perform a physical exam to take a look at your troublesome areas and see what he can do to help. Of course, your input is essential here as well, so he’ll ask what you’d like to achieve with this procedure. With this information, he devises a strategy to improve your confidence and help you look even better than before you gave birth.

It’s OK if you don’t know exactly what you want during your initial consultation. Our doctors love talking things over with our Houston and Lake Jackson patients, so you can get a better idea of what is possible with the Mommy Makeover procedure.

  • Can I Have A Mommy Makeover If I've Never Had Children?

Of course! There are plenty of reasons why women experience sagging and loss of skin elasticity throughout their bodies. The simple fact of aging and even extreme weight fluctuations could leave behind a less than desirable physical appearance. If you are interested in having a combination surgery, call our doctors today to schedule a consultation to find out how the mommy makeover concept can address your specific needs.

  • Do I Have To Have Breast Implants Placed During My Mommy Makeover?

No, you are certainly not required to have breast implants placed during your procedure. If your main concern is having your breasts repositioned to a more natural position, our doctors can perform a breast lift and not a breast augmentation. However, it is important to point out that not using breast implants in combination with your breast lift, may mean your breasts won’t have the fullness you desire. When deflated and sagging breasts are lifted and repositioned without breast implants, they may appear to be smaller than they were in years past. It’s all about your personal preference and unique desires. Our doctors are most concerned with providing each of his patients with a natural look they’ll be happy with for years to come, so your wish is his command!

  • Where Will My Mommy Makeover Be Performed?

Dr. Yarish has created a state-of-the-art facility conveniently located in Houston! This surgical facility is a fully staffed AAAA facility and was built for the private patients of Yarish Plastic Surgery. Each team member has been handpicked by Dr. Yarish, so you can rest assured that everyone you encounter will be highly trained, exemplary professionals.
